Emulsion Paint Manufacturing Process — Steps
Water Phase Preparation
Mix water, dispersant, thickener (HEC), preservative and pH adjuster in HSD at low speed until uniform.
Pigment Dispersion
Add TiO2 and fillers into water phase. Run HSD at 1200–1500 RPM for 20–30 minutes until fineness of grind is Hegman 4–5.
Bead Mill Grinding
For premium grades: pass through Bead Mill to achieve <15 micron particle size for maximum gloss and coverage.
Let-Down
Add acrylic emulsion (binder), defoamer, coalescent and remaining water to dispersion in SS mixing tank at slow speed.
QC Check
Measure viscosity (KU), pH, specific gravity. Check against QC parameter targets. Adjust thickener or water if needed.
Filling & Packing
Fill into 1L, 4L, 10L, 20L containers. Label, batch code. Store in dry, shaded area. Shelf life 12–18 months.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the paint manufacturing process?
(1) Water phase preparation — dispersant, thickener, preservative in HSD at low speed; (2) Pigment dispersion — TiO2 and fillers at 1200–1500 RPM HSD; (3) Bead Mill grinding (premium grades); (4) Let-down — add binder, defoamer, coalescent; (5) QC check; (6) Filling and packing.
What is the process for wall putty manufacturing?
(1) Dry weigh all ingredients; (2) Load calcium carbonate into ribbon blender; (3) Add white cement; (4) Add HPMC and RDP; (5) Blend at standard speed for 20–30 minutes; (6) QC check (fineness, consistency); (7) Bag filling and packing.
What is the process for distemper paint?
Dry distemper: blend chalk powder, pigments and glue binder in ribbon blender. Oil-bound distemper: blend chalk with linseed oil derivative in pug mill at low speed until paste forms, then add pigments and water.
What is the process for enamel paint?
(1) TiO2 and pigment pre-dispersion in HSD with alkyd resin; (2) Bead mill grinding to <10 Hegman; (3) Let-down with remaining alkyd resin, driers; (4) Thinning to viscosity target; (5) QC check; (6) Filling.
How long does one batch of emulsion paint take?
Small batch (200–500L): 2–3 hours including pre-mixing, HSD dispersion, let-down, QC and filling. With bead mill (premium grade): 4–5 hours. IPCS SOP specifies exact timing for each stage.
What is the minimum batch size for paint production?
200–500L is typical minimum for HSD efficiency. Below 200L, pigment dispersion quality deteriorates because the disc-to-tank diameter ratio becomes too large. IPCS designs the HSD tank size to match your minimum batch requirements.
How do I ensure color consistency between batches?
Fixed TiO2 grade from same supplier, fixed calcium carbonate particle size, fixed dispersant lot, fixed mixing speed and time, and colorimetric check against standard swatch. IPCS SOP includes color consistency checks.
What safety measures are needed in paint manufacturing?
Adequate ventilation, fire extinguisher near solvent storage, PPE (gloves, safety glasses, dust mask for powder), grounding for solvent handling equipment, proper chemical storage labels, first-aid kit.
How do I handle paint batch rejection?
Stop and quarantine the batch. Run root cause analysis — check raw material lot, mixing sequence, viscosity measurement and QC parameters. IPCS troubleshooting guide covers the most common rejection causes with corrective action.
What is the energy consumption of a paint factory?
Small paint plant (500L/day): 5–15 kWh/day depending on HSD motor size and number of batches. Medium plant (2000L/day): 20–50 kWh/day. IPCS designs the machine setup to minimize energy consumption for your output target.
